The wall surrounding the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery in front of Kyiv's Mikhaylivska Square is called the "Wall of Memory" by Ukrainians today. From the Donbass War in 2014 to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, countless photos of heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect Ukraine are densely attached to this wall.
There are about 5,000 photos attached to this 120m long wall. Numerous faces, numerous names, their hometowns, and their dates of birth and death.
Photos and national flags of foreign participants, including those from Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Germany, and Japan, are also densely attached. The wall of photos - the Wall of Memory - has become so long that it fills up one side of the monastery fence.
Families, relatives, friends, and colleagues constantly visit here to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers. Those who have traveled hundreds of kilometers replace the sun-bleached photos with new ones, and decorate the walls with new flowers, candles, wreaths, and flags.
The wall, where each person's photos are gathered, has now become a 'mosaic of remembrance'. It is unclear how long this wall will last, or how much longer it will have to be. It is difficult to continue talking.
